India Suspends Visas in Rajshahi and Khulna as Bangladesh Unrest Grows
The situation on the ground in Bangladesh is moving fast. The thing is, India just locked the doors on two more visa centers today. Specifically, IVAC Rajshahi and Khulna are officially closed for December 18.
This follows a massive protest march near the Indian High Commission in Dhaka. Actually, the group “July Oikya” tried to break through police barricades just yesterday. Consequently, the security environment for Indian staff has reached a breaking point.
And here’s the kicker. A radical leader just threatened to isolate India’s “Seven Sisters” states. In fact, NCP leader Hasnat Abdullah openly talked about cutting off the Northeast. Basically, the interim government in Dhaka is letting these extremist voices get loud (let’s be real, it’s a mess).
Threats against the Indian mission in Dhaka increased. And then the response followed. India’s Ministry of External Affairs summoned the Bangladesh High Commissioner to demand better protection. Furthermore, the MEA rejected the “false narratives” being spread by these groups.
Actually, the thing is, the visa suspension is already hitting people hard. As a result, if you had an appointment slot today, you’re just going to have to wait for a new date. Specifically, thousands of travelers are now stuck in limbo across Rajshahi and Khulna (those too).
Security Lockdown: A Quick Check
-
Rajshahi Closure: The gates were barred early this morning. In fact, it’s indefinitely shut.
-
Khulna Suspension: Same deal here. Basically, the “security situation” is the only reason given.
-
Dhaka Operations: Jamuna Future Park shut down at 2 PM yesterday. Specifically, it’s the main hub, and it’s totally quiet now.
Furthermore, Bangladesh’s Foreign Advisor Touhid Hossain says India’s advice on elections is “unacceptable.” In fact, he claims Dhaka doesn’t need help running a poll in February. Instead of cooling things down, he’s pointing fingers at India’s past ties.
The thing is, radical elements are still organizing more marches for tomorrow. Consequently, the security at the High Commission in Gulshan is being ramped up right now.
Basically, the tension isn’t going anywhere—it’s just simmering (I checked this twice).
