If a fraudster tries to open a bank account using the Aadhaar of another person and opens the bank account, in such a case the Aadhaar cardholder cannot be held responsible for the mistake of the bank.


Aadhar card is a very important government document. Aadhar card contains many important information of a user. Aadhar card holders are also given a 12 digit unique number. There are many types of questions in people’s mind regarding Aadhar card.

A question is often in people’s mind that what happens if someone fraudulently opens an account in the bank through a copy of someone’s Aadhar card? Or will action be taken against the Aadhar card holder in such cases?

According to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the issuing body of Aadhaar, Aadhaar card is one of the valid documents for opening a bank account under the PML (Prevention of Money-Laundering) rules. Banks have to complete a process like KYC to open an account.

If a fraudster tries to open a bank account using the Aadhaar of another person and opens the bank account, in such a case the Aadhaar cardholder cannot be held responsible for the mistake of the bank.

It is like if a fraudster opens a bank account using someone else’s voter card / ration card, then the bank is held responsible for it. According to UIDAI, till date no Aadhar cardholder has suffered any financial loss due to such fraud.
