Important news for PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm users: These new rules will be applicable in UPI from August 1

NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) has released new API guidelines for banks and payment apps to make UPI faster, secure and stable.

UPI New Rules From August 1: If you use UPI apps like PhonePe, Google Pay or Paytm daily, then some new rules will be applicable for you from August 1, 2025. NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) has issued new API guidelines for banks and payment apps to make UPI faster, safer and stable. These changes are technical, but they will directly affect your daily UPI transactions.

1. Limit for checking balance is fixed

Now you will be able to check account balance only 50 times a day from any one UPI app. This limit has been imposed so that the system is not loaded with repeated balance requests. This limit is sufficient for common users, and it will also improve the speed of the server.

2. The limit for viewing linked accounts is also fixed

Now any app will be able to check which bank accounts are linked to your mobile number only 25 times a day. This will reduce unnecessary API calls and the UPI service will run more smoothly.

3. Time slots will be fixed for auto-debit payments

Auto-debit transactions for Netflix, SIP or other subscriptions will now be processed in only 3 time slots:

before 10 a.m.

Between 1 and 5 p.m.

After 9:30 p.m.

This will reduce the load on the server during peak hours and the AutoPay service will run smoothly.

4. Ban on checking status of failed payment

If a payment has failed, you will now be able to check its status only 3 times. That too, there will be a gap of at least 90 seconds each time. The purpose of this is to reduce the load on the server and increase the success rate of transaction retry or reversal.

5. Speed boost has already arrived in June 2025

Even before the August 1 update, NPCI had reduced the API response time in June 2025:

15 seconds for payment

10 seconds for failed transactions
This makes transactions faster and errors are fixed quickly.

6. The name of the real beneficiary will now appear first

From June 30, 2025, all UPI apps will display the registered name of the person to whom you are sending money before the transaction. This has reduced the risk of fraud or money going to the wrong account to a great extent.

7. Chargeback limit has also been implemented

A limit has also been imposed on chargebacks from December 2024. Now chargebacks can be done only 10 times in a month and only 5 times with any one user or company. This will prevent misuse of the system and genuine cases will get quick solution.
