IMD Rain Forecast: The Meteorological Department has predicted that heavy rains will continue in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal till September 26. Heavy to moderate rains were recorded in many districts of the state in the last 24 hours.

According to the Meteorological Department (IMD), Arakkonam in Ranipet district received the highest rainfall of 7 cm. Ambattur in Tiruvallur district and Ayyappakkam and Korattur in Chennai recorded 6 cm of rainfall. The IMD said that most districts in the northern parts of the state and some parts of the south received moderate to heavy rains. Punjab will also receive intermittent rains during this period. The Western Disturbance may become active in the last days of September. During this, the rains may continue for a few days.

Meteorologists said the rains are being caused by a low-level atmospheric circulation over south Tamil Nadu. The system will remain active for the next five days, bringing intermittent rain, thunderstorms and strong winds to the northern and southern districts of the state. Similar conditions are also likely to prevail over Puducherry and Karaikal regions during this period.

IMD issued a warning

Chennai is expected to receive light to moderate rains, along with thunderstorms and lightning. The IMD has warned that sudden showers may disrupt traffic in low-lying areas, so travellers should plan their travel carefully. The southwest monsoon has been active since it reached Tamil Nadu on June 1. The state recorded an average of 30 cm of rainfall during this period, which is about 5 per cent more than the long-term average. Experts have described it as a normal monsoon with positive trends.

New system in the Bay of Bengal

Meanwhile, a new low-pressure system is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal near the Myanmar-Bangladesh coast on September 25. If it intensifies, rainfall activity may increase in Tamil Nadu and surrounding areas. Incessant rains are affecting schools, offices and agricultural activities. Fishermen have been advised to exercise extreme caution while venturing into the sea. IMD has appealed to citizens to pay regular attention to weather bulletins.
