It’s Thursday morning, January 29, 2026, and if you’re in Delhi, you probably woke up to a biting chill. The IMD has issued a yellow alert as the minimum temperature hit 9°C, and it might drop as low as 7°C over the next 48 hours. The thing is, the “dry cold” is about to get a lot wetter.

The “Project February” Rain: Field Notes

It’s an ongoing situation where a fresh Western Disturbance is moving in from the night of January 30. Here’s the ground reality:

  • The Rain Alert: By Sunday, February 1, expect “one or two spells of light rain” across Delhi-NCR. Those too. The IMD says we could see thunder, lightning, and gusty winds reaching 30–40 km/h.

  • Regional Impact: It’s not just the capital. Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are also on the list for showers. Let’s be real—the recent hailstorms in Dewas, MP, have already wrecked potato and garlic crops, and this next spell isn’t helping.

  • The “Himalayan Chaos”: Up north, the situation is brutal. Three avalanches hit Chamba (HP) recently, and Kedarnath is currently sitting under four feet of snow. The thing is, while the Jammu-Srinagar Highway (NH-44) partially reopened yesterday, the IMD is warning of more heavy snowfall for the hills on February 1.

And Here’s the Kicker…

While we’re talking about rain, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi actually “improved” to 270 (Poor) this morning. The thing is, if the winds remain light before the rain hits on Sunday, that pollution is just going to sit there. Those too.

One side comment—if you’re planning a weekend trip to Mussoorie or Dhanaulti, the BRO is working overtime to clear roads, but many connecting routes are still blocked. It’s an ongoing situation where the “winter wonderland” is looking a lot more like a “winter gridlock.” Or nothing.
