Heavy Rain Alert: Kangana Ranaut, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament from Mandi constituency in Himachal Pradesh, visited the disaster-hit areas of Solang and Palchan in the Manali subdivision of Kullu district on Thursday (September 18). She spoke with affected people and took stock of the situation.
Heavy Rain Alert : The Meteorological Department has issued a ‘ Yellow Alert ‘ warning of heavy rains in four districts of Himachal Pradesh . Many parts of the state received moderate to heavy rains on Thursday (September 18). Officials said that a total of 566 roads, including two national highways, have been closed due to the torrential rains. Kangana Ranaut, Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP ) MP from Mandi parliamentary constituency , visited the disaster-hit areas of Solang and Palchan in Manali sub-division of Kullu district on Thursday . She interacted with the affected people and took stock of the situation.
Ranaut , a former acting- turned -politician , was briefed by Manali BJP leader and former MLA Govind Singh Thakur, along with local residents, about the damage and other losses caused by the rains. Singh told the MP that families from 15-16 threatened houses had been evacuated to safer locations.
Locals told the BJP MP that the entire village of Solang is at risk of landslides . The Beas River is eroding the mountain on which the village is situated. Locals suggested that diverting the flow of water and changing the river’s route would be an immediate solution.
Heavy rain warning in these districts
The local meteorological office has issued a ‘ yellow alert’ for heavy rain and thundershowers in isolated areas of Bilaspur , Kangra , Mandi and Sirmaur on Thursday. The IMD said Shimla , Kangra , Palampur , Murari Devi and Sundernagar experienced rain and thundershowers, while Tabo and Bajaura witnessed strong winds with a speed of 33 to 35 kmph.
A total of 566 roads, including NH 3 (Attari-Leh route) and NH 503A ( Amritsar-Bhota route), were closed on Thursday morning . Mandi has the highest number of road closures, with 203. Traffic is disrupted on 156 roads in Kullu and 50 in Shimla district.
Since the arrival of the monsoon this year, the Himalayan state has witnessed 46 cloudbursts, 98 flash floods, and 145 major landslides , claiming 419 lives. Of these , 237 were killed in rain – related incidents and 182 in road accidents . 479 people were injured , while 45 are still missing .
‘ Yellow alert ‘ issued in Kerala too
The Indian Meteorological Department ( IMD) on Thursday issued a ‘ yellow alert ‘ for six districts in Kerala . The forecast warned of isolated heavy rainfall over the next five days. Residents of Pathanamthitta , Alappuzha , Kottayam , Idukki , Ernakulam and Thrissur may experience intermittent heavy rains until September 23.
