The minimum balance is based on the simple average of the balance at the end of the month. When the account holder does not maintain the prescribed minimum balance, the bank charges a penalty.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has clarified that each bank is free to set its own MAB. RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said, “RBI has left it to the bank to decide the minimum balance. Some banks keep it at ₹10,000, some at ₹2,000 and some have given discounts to customers. This does not come under RBI’s regulatory domain.”
