Meanwhile, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick defended the decision, saying, “Either the person must be valuable enough for the company to pay this amount, or they should return to their country.” He added, “The company must decide. Is the employee so important that the government should pay $100,000 annually, or should they be sent home and hired in the US?”

Lutnick stressed that the policy aims to ensure that only the “highest, most capable people” are admitted. He said, “Either that person is very valuable to the company and to the United States, or they’ll go back and the company will hire an American… Stop the nonsense.”

He further said that the purpose of this policy is to give priority to American graduates. If you’re going to train someone, train someone who recently graduated from one of our great universities. Train Americans. Stop bringing in people to take our jobs. Trump further said, “The technology sector will support this change. They will be very happy with the new visa fees.”

Trump’s focus on H-1B visas has long been an issue for the tech industry, as the sector relies heavily on foreign talent. Government data shows that about two-thirds of H-1B jobs are in computer-related fields, though the program is also used to hire engineers, teachers, and healthcare professionals.
