If a passenger travels less distance then the GPS based toll system will charge him less accordingly. At present there is no such system.

The central government is planning to start testing GPS-based toll collection on 5 to 10 highways of the country from next month i.e. February. This method of toll collection will be more efficient and faster. According to Livemint news, with its launch the existing toll Fastag platform will become history. Anurag Jain, Road Secretary in the Road Ministry, said that before implementing it across the country, it will be tested on limited highways.

Toll will be deducted in moving vehicle

Highway developer NHAI is working on a satellite-based GPS toll system. However, there are some concerns regarding this new system which will be considered. In the new system, toll will be deducted from the moving vehicle as soon as the plaza is over. In GPS based tolling, there will be a need to install a device in the vehicles which will be able to track their movement. Toll will be deducted according to the distance traveled at the exit point of the highway.

Toll will be deducted according to distance

If a passenger travels less distance then the GPS based toll system will charge him less accordingly. At present there is no such system. At present, even if the vehicle goes out of the highway immediately after a short distance, the full toll has to be paid. The new system will be sensor based. Therefore, passengers will not need to stop or wait on the highway to pay toll. In GPS based toll system, the user will have to register himself and his vehicle and get it attached to the bank account.

There is still a lot of homework to do

The Ministry of Road and Transport has made changes in the National Highway Fee rules in which users will get the facility of deducting toll according to the distance covered on the National Highway. However, there is a lot of homework to be done before all these things can be implemented. The official has said that one thing in this new system is regarding the privacy of the user. This is also being considered. GPS tolling can track user’s personal data. Privacy of his movement on the highway is an important issue.
