New Delhi. These days Electric Vehicles in India is booming all over the country. New electric cars and scooters are being launched continuously. People are now showing great interest in buying electric vehicles amid rising prices of petrol and diesel.
But many people are currently shying away from buying electric vehicles due to exorbitant prices. But now there is good news for such people. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said that the price of electric and petrol vehicles will become one in the next two years. Gadkari says that soon a revolution is going to come in this area.
Addressing the annual session of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and the FY21 AGM, Gadkari said, “Within two years, the cost of electric vehicles will come down to a level that will be at par with their petrol variants.” He also said that the government is working to expand EV charging facilities. Gadkari further said, “We are setting up 600 EV charging points on major highways by 2023. The government also wants to ensure that the charging stations are powered by renewable sources like solar or wind power.
Price will come down
Gadkari said that the cost of EVs is more because their number is less. He said that India is looking forward to the EV revolution, with 250 startup businesses engaged in manufacturing cost-effective EV technology. In addition, major automakers have joined forces in trying to cut the cost of EV production. The GST on electric vehicles is only 5% and the cost of lithium-ion batteries is also coming down.
Cheapest Transport
Gadkari also believes that due to the cheap per kilometer cost, there will be a lot of sales of electric vehicles in India. Gadkari said, “Petrol-operated car costs Rs 10 per km, diesel costs Rs 7 per km and electricity costs just Rs 1 per km.” The minister stressed on the use of alternative fuels like ethanol and CNG to reduce dependence on conventional fuels like gasoline and diesel.
