Why will banks be closed on Friday 9 May?

Banks are going to be closed in West Bengal on Friday 9 May. Banks are closed in many parts of West Bengal including Kolkata on the occasion of Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary. The birth anniversary of Tagore, a great poet, writer and thinker awarded the Nobel Prize, is celebrated as a cultural pride and tradition in the state. On this occasion, all government and many private banking institutions are closed due to the state government declaring a holiday.

List of bank holidays according to states in May 2025

  • May 9 (Friday): Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti – Banks closed in Kolkata.
  • 12 May (Monday): Buddha Purnima – Banks closed in Agartala, Aizawl, Belapur, Bhopal, Dehradun, Itanagar, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Raipur, Ranchi, Shimla and Srinagar.
  • 16 May (Friday): State Day – Banks closed in Gangtok.
  • 26 May (Monday): Birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam – Banks closed in Agartala.
  • 29 May (Thursday): Maharana Pratap Jayanti – Banks closed in Shimla.

Apart from this, banks will remain closed in May due to regular weekly holidays. These holidays will be closed on all Sundays i.e. 4, 11, 18 and 25 May. Apart from this, banks will remain closed on second and fourth Saturdays on 10 and 24 May.

Will online banking services be available?

Yes, even during these holidays, customers can use money transactions, bill payments and other digital services through UPI, IMPS, net banking and mobile banking apps. However, since the bank branches will not function, customers are advised to complete the important work in advance to avoid any inconvenience.
