NoNew Delhi, June 12 (IANS) South Korea started the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a win. In a thrilling match, the team defeated Czech Republic 2-1. South Korea came back from 1-0 down in the second half to win.
South Korea and Czechia got several chances to score early in the match, but both teams failed to capitalize on them. In the 9th minute, South Korea had a great chance to take the lead from a free kick, but the Czech defense thwarted their hopes. In the 11th minute, South Korea also failed to capitalize on a corner. Korea put a lot of pressure on the Czech defense in the first half, but failed to penetrate their defense.
Both teams failed to score a single goal in the first half. However, Czechia started the second half aggressively and found success in the 59th minute. Ladislav Krejčí scored a brilliant header to give the team a 1-0 lead. However, after trailing 0-1, South Korea made a remarkable comeback. In the 67th minute, Hong In-beom scored the first goal for the team, equalizing the score at 1-1. After this, Oh Hyeon-gyu gave South Korea the lead in the match in the 80th minute.
After taking a 2-1 lead, South Korea didn’t give Czech Republic any chance to make a comeback. Czech Republic played aggressively and made several attempts to score, but could not penetrate South Korea’s defense. Ultimately, South Korea won 2-1, marking a winning start to the FIFA World Cup 2026.
