Fastag: The system of automatic deduction of toll tax from Fastag in the Electronic Toll Collection System (ETC) has made the travel of road travelers on national highways easier, but on one hand it has given relief to the road travelers, on the other hand it has resulted in travel without Toll tax was also automatically deducted from Fastag. In the last financial year, more than eight and a half lakh Fastag related complaints were registered on helpline number 1033. That means around 2400 complaints were made every day regarding Fastag. There are more than 1.5 lakh complaints in which the journey was not undertaken yet toll tax was automatically deducted from Fastag.

At the same time, there are more than 1.25 lakh complaints regarding taking toll more than the fixed rate. Indian National Highway Management Company Limited (IHMCL), a public undertaking of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, has released the report for the financial year 2022-23. This company has been formed mainly to facilitate complaints related to toll tax on national highways.

8.66 lakh complaints received on helpline number

The report mentions that a total of 8,66,971 complaints were received on the NHAI helpline number in the last financial year. In 1,55,657 complaints, it has been said that even though they did not travel, toll tax was deducted from their Fastag. In some cases toll was deducted without their consent. At the same time, 1,26,850 road travelers have complained about charging more than the fixed rates of toll tax through Fastag, while 1,68,060 vehicles were not allowed to pass through the toll plaza barrier despite having Fastag. 35,580 road travelers were shown low balance in their Fastag despite having sufficient bank balance or were shown Fastag blacklist.

100% resolution of complaints

IHMCL has claimed in its report that 100 percent of the complaints registered on 1033 were resolved in the financial year 2022-23. That means a total of 8,66,971 complaints were resolved. Experts say that in case of low balance in Fastag or being blacklisted, there is a provision to collect double toll tax as fine from the road passenger. At the same time, 1,68,060 vehicles which had Fastag were not able to cross the toll plaza barrier. In such a situation, the vehicle is considered without Fastag and double tax has to be paid.
