Donald Trump is back in the headlines! His new statement could increase tensions in India.

India US Relations: The Trump administration has doubled import duties on Indian goods to 50 percent, which also includes an additional 25 percent tariff on purchase of Russian oil.

Trump Claims on Russian Oil: US President Donald Trump is once again in the headlines for his controversial statements. He has previously created tensions in US-India relations with his statements and claims—such as attempting to take credit for stopping the Pahalgam attack. Now, amid efforts to stop the Ukraine war, Trump has made another major claim about India.

What is Trump’s new claim?

Trump has said that India has agreed to stop buying oil from Russia and will “virtually stop” imports by the end of the year. He said this is a “process” that will take some time. He also said that he will now try to persuade China to do the same. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said that India has told him that they are going to stop buying Russian oil. “It’s a process; you can’t stop suddenly… By the end of the year, they will almost stop it, that is, reduce it by about 40 percent.”

The US believes that New Delhi’s purchase of crude oil from Moscow is tantamount to indirectly providing financial support to Russian President Vladimir Putin for war.

Recently, relations between New Delhi and Washington have been strained due to high tariffs and Trump’s statements. The Trump administration has imposed a 50 percent tariff on Indian goods. This includes a 25 percent basic tariff, while an additional 25 percent tariff has been imposed as a penalty for purchasing oil from Russia. However, India has termed Trump’s move as unfair, unjust, and impractical.

Is Trump’s claim true?

Trump also said that he will soon meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss ways to end the Russia-Ukraine war. He stated that he and Chinese President Xi Jinping will primarily discuss how to end the war between Russia and Ukraine—whether through oil, energy, or other means.

Trump alleged that the policies of former presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama have brought China and Russia closer together. Trump will meet Xi Jinping at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea later this month.

Defending his trade policy, he said that America is a stronger country today because of tariffs. Previously, they were used against us, weakening America and causing our debt to reach $37 trillion. Now, tariffs have made us prosperous and helped prevent conflicts. He claimed that he prevented eight wars, of which “five or six were solely because of tariffs.” Trump also reiterated that they played a role in preventing recent military tensions between India and Pakistan.
