Diwali Holidays 2025: Amidst the glow of lamps and the aroma of sweets, a question lingers in everyone’s mind: will the 2025 Diwali holiday be on October 20th or 21st? This year, Diwali will be celebrated on the 20th, but the new moon date will last until the evening of October 21st. Therefore, in some places, a half-day holiday may be declared on the 21st as well.

Which day is the government holiday?

In most states, October 20th (Monday) has been declared the main holiday for Diwali, as this is the day when Lakshmi Puja is primarily performed. However, in some places, a half-day holiday may be declared on October 21st, depending on local customs. State government announcements may vary.

Long holidays for schools and colleges

This year, Chhath Puja is falling in October along with Diwali, so in many states, schools and colleges will remain closed from 18th October to 23rd October – this makes a total of 6 days holiday. This includes:

Dhanteras – 18th October

Narak Chaturdashi – 19th October

Diwali – 20th October

Govardhan Puja – 21st October

Bhai Dooj – 23rd October

In Delhi-NCR, the main holiday will be on 20th October, but many private schools will remain closed from 18th to 23rd October. There will also be a holiday on 10th October due to Karva Chauth.

Banking services: Closed or open?

Banks will be closed in most cities on both October 20 and 21, as per Reserve Bank of India (RBI) instructions. Bank branches in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad will be closed on October 20.

Many states will observe a bank holiday on October 21 for Govardhan Puja.

However, net banking, UPI, and other digital banking services will remain operational.
