DU Admission: There is big news for all the colleges affiliated to Delhi University (DU). The Delhi High Court has made it clear that from now on every college will have to implement 5% reservation under Extra Curricular Activities (ECA) and Sports Quota.
This decision has come after hearing a petition in which the problems of the students were taken into consideration. Let’s know what the whole matter is and what will happen next?
DU Admission Reservation Quota: What is the whole matter?
This story begins with Aditi Rawat. Aditi has won a gold medal in CBSE’s national level lawn tennis. Since she was a minor, her mother Anita Rawat filed a petition in the High Court. She demanded a sports quota seat in Hindu College for the 2025-26 session because she felt that DU’s rules were not being followed.
DU Admission Policy: What is DU’s policy?
Aditi’s lawyers Jitendra Gupta, Bharat Rawat and Ashish Mishra argued that according to DU’s policy, every college should reserve 5% of its total seats for ECA and sports quota, but Hindu College kept only 10 seats each for ECA and sports out of 956 seats, while 47 seats are fixed. This was wrong, so the matter went to court.
Admission in Hindu College: Hindu College’s answer
Hindu College said that the quota mentioned in DU’s information booklet is not mandatory. The college claimed that they did not need to reserve so many seats, but DU made it clear by giving an affidavit in the court that 5% reservation will have to be implemented under all circumstances.
Delhi High court verdict: Court’s decision
Justice Vikas Mahajan said that after DU’s affidavit, there was no doubt left that 5% quota is necessary. The court strictly said that from now on all the colleges will have to follow this rule but since the admission process for the 2025-26 session has been completed and Aditi has got admission in Lady Shri Ram College through sports quota, she did not get relief for this session.
DU Spot Admission: Clarity on spot admission
Lawyer Gupta said that DU has issued a notice for spot admission. The court clarified that this notice is only for regular seats, it will not apply to ECA/sports supernumerary quota. The petitioner demanded strict adherence to the rules in future, which was also supported by DU’s lawyer. The court ordered that from now on every college will give 5% reservation as per DU’s guidelines.
Now what?
This decision is a big relief for DU students, especially those who are proficient in ECA and sports. Now colleges will have to follow the rules so that talent gets the right opportunity. So if you want to take admission in DU through ECA or sports quota, then the chances have increased from the next session.
