Delhi Metro has been continuously emphasizing on making fare payment more convenient for the convenience of the commuters. In this sequence, during the fourth phase, 44 stations have started installing new Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system.

Traveling in Delhi Metro will now become easier than ever before. Now you will no longer need to stand in line to collect tokens or recharge smartcards. You will now be able to pay the fare for travel in the metro directly with your bank’s debit or credit card. The latest automatic fare machines are being installed for this by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.

New AFC at 44 stations in Phase-4

In such a situation, people will now be able to pay metro fare through debit and credit cards, Near Field Communication (NFC), QR code-based ticketing mobile phones and paper QR tickets, apart from smart cards. For this, DMRC has now started installing Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system at 44 stations during the fourth phase. Apart from this, the AFC gates installed at the existing station will also be updated.

Now facility only on airport line

A DMRC official said the new system will lead to more digitization of services besides cashless and human error free transactions. Metro Corporation is also upgrading the AFC firmware. With this, passengers will be able to use their credit or debit card as a smart card. At present, this facility is available only on the Airport Express Line in the Rajdhani.

  • Delhi Metro network has 2700 AFC gates
  • Presently there are 32 Fair Zones
  • After expansion in Phase-4, there will be 64 Fair Zones.
  • 44 new AFC systems to be installed in Phase-4
  • New Delhi and Chandni Chowk metro stations have maximum 44 AFC gates.

All bank cards will be accepted from Rupay portal

Also at present, some metropolitan cities like Kochi and Nagpur have this facility. However, there only Debit/Credit cards of particular banks are acceptable. DMRC’s system will be able to accept transactions from all banks through RuPay portal. The new system will also help in creating more ‘fare zones’ in the metro network. It helps in determining the fare to be deducted from the smart card based on the distance traveled.

Rent can be paid in these ways

  • Smart card
  • National Common Mobility Card
  • Mobile Based NFC (Near Field Communication Ticketing)
  • Mobile QR Code Based Ticketing
  • Paper QR ticket

Now penalty will be deducted from smart card

DMRC spokesperson said that under the new system, penalty deduction will also be possible through smart cards. At present, a passenger needs to pay the inflated price at the time of exit. For this, one has to go to its customer service window. In the new system, penalty can be paid only through smart cards.

DMRC will also integrate Point of Sale (POS) terminals with ticketing machines into customer service at Phase-I and II stations. This is necessary to facilitate payment through credit and debit cards. Smart card can also be recharged from POS.
