Government employees across the country eagerly await a hike in their salaries and allowances from time to time. The central and state governments also announce hikes in salaries and DA from time to time. Recently, the central government announced an increase in dearness allowance for central employees and the dearness allowance has also been implemented for central employees. After the central government, some state governments also announced an increase in dearness allowance. Now, another state in South India has done so. On Thursday, the Tamil Nadu government announced a 3 percent hike in dearness allowance for government employees and pensioners.
How much is the dearness allowance now?
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced an increase in dearness allowance for government employees and teachers. Their dearness allowance has been raised from 55% to 58%. With this, the dearness allowance of Tamil Nadu government employees has become equal to that of central government employees.
Approximately 1.6 million government employees, teachers, and pensioners in Tamil Nadu will benefit from this. It was reported that the increase in dearness allowance will add an additional burden of ₹1,829 crore to the government treasury.
The Centre and several states had increased the DA
Previously, the central government increased dearness allowance and dearness relief for central government employees and pensioners. Following the central government’s decision, dearness allowances were also increased for government employees in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha. The Bihar government also gave its employees, pensioners, and family pensioners a significant gift ahead of Diwali and Chhath. The government announced an increase in the dearness allowance/relief rate from 55% to 58%. The new rate will be effective July 1, 2025.
Last month, the Uttar Pradesh government also announced a three percent increase in dearness allowance for state government employees and pensioners. According to a statement issued by the state government, the decision was taken to increase the dearness allowance by three percent for 2.8 million employees and pensioners in Uttar Pradesh. The dearness allowance has now increased from 55 percent to 58 percent.
