Cheque Clearance Rules 2025: Now you won’t have to wait two days for your Cheque to clear. Starting October 4, 2025, the RBI will implement a new system that will allow Cheque to clear within a few hours and the money will be credited to your account.
If you’ve ever deposited a Cheque in a bank, you know that it can take up to two days for it to clear and the money to arrive in your account. But now this hassle is about to end. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that a new Cheque clearing system will be implemented from October 4, 2025. Under this system, your Cheque will be cleared within a few hours and the money will reach your account quickly.
How will the new system work?
The RBI has announced that the existing Cheque Truncation System (CTS) will be made faster. As soon as you deposit a cCheque at your bank, a scanned copy will be immediately sent to the clearing house and then to the paying bank. From there, the bank will have to approve or reject the Cheque within the stipulated time. This will reduce the clearing time from two days to just a few hours.
The new cheque clearing system will be implemented in two phases.
The first phase will be effective from October 4, 2025, to January 3, 2026. The bank must approve the Cheque by 7 p.m. upon receipt. If the bank fails to respond in time, the Cheque will automatically be passed.
The second phase will be implemented from January 3, 2026. Banks must clear Cheque within just three hours of receipt. For example, if you deposit a Cheque at 10 a.m., it will clear between 1 and 2 p.m.
Timing and Process
Banks will conduct continuous Cheque presentation sessions from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, meaning scanned copies will be sent throughout the day. Confirmation times will be from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Banks must respond to the first stage by 7:00 PM, but the second stage will only require clearing within three hours.
Customers will benefit directly
The biggest benefit of this change will be to customers. Now, you won’t have to wait two days for your money to arrive. The bank will deposit the funds into your account within one hour of clearing. This means that upon depositing your Cheque, you’ll have your money almost the same day.
