Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) is an important financial assistance scheme provided by the Central Government to pregnant and lactating mothers in India. Its main objective is to ensure the health and nutrition of women during pregnancy. So that both the mother and the child can be healthy. This assistance is directly credited to the women’s bank account.

PMMVY is a flagship scheme of the central government. Its aim is to provide financial support to women during pregnancy and childbirth. Usually, during this time, women have to stay away from wage work. This reduces the family income. To compensate for that deficit, this scheme helps in getting better food and medical services.

Under this scheme, the government will directly transfer up to Rs. 11,000 to the accounts of women. This amount will be received in two main installments instead of all at once. For the sake of transparency, this money will be deposited under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system.

A woman will receive a financial assistance of Rs. 5000 when her first child is born. This amount will be given in three separate installments. First installment: It will be given after registering the pregnancy. Second installment: It will be paid after completing at least one health check-up. Third installment: It will be given after submitting the child’s birth certificate and vaccination records. This money will help to cover nutrition, rest, and medical expenses.

Additional assistance if the second child is a girl – If the second child is a girl, the government will provide an additional assistance of Rs. 6000 to the woman. This Rs. 6000 will be received in a single installment. This special provision aims to promote the birth of girl children and increase gender equality. In this way, the total assistance will reach Rs. 11,000.

Eligibility Rules – There are some basic rules to apply for this scheme. The woman should be at least 19 years of age. The benefit of this scheme is applicable only for the first two live births (Rs. 5000 for the first child, Rs. 6000 if the second child is a girl). The application should be made within 270 days of the birth of the child. Eligible women of all categories (SC/ST/OBC/General) can get the benefit.
