The Central Board of Secondary Education i.e. CBSE has issued a very important notice regarding the class 10th and 12th board examinations. CBSE has issued a comprehensive directive tightening the eligibility criteria for students appearing for class 10 and 12 board examinations. The new notice issued clarifies that no student will be allowed to appear in the examination without fulfilling strict academic and attendance requirements. Students can check the notice by visiting the official website.

compulsory attendance

The board has clarified that the attendance of students should be at least 75% to appear in the board exams.

Attendance will be strictly monitored, and schools are required to maintain a daily register.
Exemptions of up to 25% may be granted only in extremely dire circumstances, such as medical emergencies, bereavement, or participation in national-level sports and cultural events—and only if the student has valid documentation.
Students with poor attendance and without a valid reason will be disqualified, whether or not they are enrolled as regular candidates.

Internal assessment cannot be skipped

  • As per NEP-2020, internal assessment is no longer an optional additional process but a core, continuous evaluation system.
  • Internal assessment is done over two years and includes periodic examinations, projects and class participation.
  • Students who do not attend school regularly will automatically be deprived of these assessments.
  • Without internal assessment records, CBSE will not declare results, and such students will be placed in the “essential repetition” category even if they have appeared in the theory exams.

Restrictions on additional subjects

CBSE has also laid down strict rules for additional subjects:

  • Class 10 students can choose two additional subjects apart from the compulsory five subjects.
  • Class 12th students can take only one additional subject.
  • It is also mandatory to study these subjects for the entire two-year course.

Pointers mentioned in the notice

  • Class 10 and Class 12 are two-year courses which include Class 10, Class 11 and Class 12 respectively. Accordingly, a student has to study all the subjects for 2 years to be eligible to appear for the exam.
  • Minimum 75% attendance of students is mandatory.
  • In all subjects offered by CBSE, as per NEP-2020, internal assessment is a mandatory integral part of assessment. It is a two-year process. If a student does not attend school, his/her internal assessment cannot be done. In the absence of performance in internal assessment, the result of the student cannot be declared. Such students, even if they are regular students, will be placed in the compulsory repetition category.”
  • CBSE offers additional subjects in class 10 and 12. In class 10, students can offer 2 subjects in addition to the compulsory 5 subjects and only 1 additional subject in class 12. Students offering additional subjects will study the additional subject for 2 years.
  • Even in affiliated schools, if a school has not taken permission from CBSE to teach a subject and does not have teachers, laboratories etc., then their students are not allowed to take such subjects as main or additional subject.
  • If a regular student has offered additional subject in previous years and has been placed under “Compartment” or “Essential Repeat” category, they can appear as a private candidate under Compartment or Essential Repeat category.
  • A student who does not fulfil the above conditions will not be eligible to appear for additional subjects in the Board examinations as a private candidate.
