A big decision has been taken by the Central Board of Secondary Education. Students studying basic math in class 10 will be able to study mathematics in class 11 as well.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has once again given relief to the students studying basic mathematics in class 10. For the academic session 2025-26, CBSE has clarified that students who had chosen Mathematics Basic in class 10 can also take Mathematics subject in class 11. However, this exemption will be given with certain conditions.
CBSE has instructed the schools to thoroughly check that the students who want to study mathematics in class 11 have the appropriate ability and ability to understand and take the subject forward. If the school feels that the students will not be able to understand mathematics at that level, then they should not be allowed to choose this subject.
How long will this rule remain in force?
CBSE has also clarified that this exemption will continue till the National Curriculum Framework (NCF-SE) is fully implemented under the New Education Policy (NEP). As soon as this new scheme is implemented, this old exemption will automatically be considered over.
Once the subject is chosen, there will be no change then
CBSE has warned the schools that if a subject is chosen while filling the LOC (List of Candidates) for the 2025 board exam, then no change will be made in it later. Schools have been asked to inform the students and parents about this in advance so that there is no problem in future.
When did this exemption start?
In view of the academic pressure of the students during the Covid epidemic, CBSE had relaxed this rule for the first time. Since then, this exemption is being given in the last three academic years. Earlier the rule was that only those students who have studied Standard Maths in class 10 can take Mathematics (041) subject in class 11. Those who took Basic Math were allowed to study only Applied Mathematics.
What is the difference between Standard and Basic Math?
CBSE had divided the Mathematics subject into two levels from March 2020 itself – Mathematics (Standard) and Mathematics (Basic). Standard Math was for those students who want to study further with Mathematics in 11th-12th or want to go into fields like engineering, science in the future. On the other hand, Basic Math was introduced keeping in mind those who want to study Mathematics only till 10th and want to avoid it further.
