Car Fitness Test Fee: Govt has increased the fitness test fee; find out how much it will cost now

Car Fitness Test Fee: The new fee for vehicle fitness testing in India has increased according to the vehicle’s age. Older vehicles will now cost more than before. Find out how much you’ll have to pay now.

Almost everyone owns a car these days. Vehicles have become a basic necessity in life. But the cost of owning a vehicle wasn’t cheap already, and now the government has added another significant change. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has increased vehicle fitness test fees nationwide and tightened them based on age. Previously, vehicles over 15 years of age were subject to higher fees.

But now this limit has been reduced to 10 years. This means that if your vehicle is over 10 years old, the fitness test will cost more than before. This change has come into effect immediately under the Fifth Amendment to the Central Motor Vehicle Rules. The new system categorizes vehicles into three categories: 10 to 15 years old, 15 to 20 years old, and over 20 years old. The fee increases as the age increases. Find out how much you’ll have to pay now.

The cost of fitness test will increase only after 10 years.

Under the new system, fitness test fees will increase after 10 years. According to reports, even vehicles under 15 years old will now pay higher fees than before. According to the amended Rule 81, the new fitness fee is set at ₹400 for motorcycles, ₹600 for light motor vehicles, and ₹1000 for medium or heavy commercial vehicles.

These new fees will only apply when vehicles are 10 years old. This means that the charges that previously accrued at 15 years will now begin five years earlier, i.e., after 10 years. This will directly impact those who drive their vehicles for extended periods and undergo fitness tests every two years.

Biggest blow to 20 year old vehicles

If your vehicle is more than 20 years old, the fitness test fee has now increased significantly. The fee for heavy commercial vehicles, such as buses and trucks, has risen from ₹2,500 to ₹25,000. For medium commercial vehicles, it has risen from ₹1,800 to ₹20,000. Light motor vehicles will now cost ₹15,000. The fee for three-wheelers is ₹7,000.

The fee for two-wheelers has been increased from ₹600 to ₹2,000. Previously, all old vehicles were charged the same amount. However, the introduction of age-based slabs has significantly increased the burden. The government claims these changes are aimed at strengthening road safety, controlling pollution, and phasing out old, inefficient vehicles.
