What is CAA?

Before the Lok Sabha elections, the Central Government has announced the implementation of CAA-2019 to give citizenship to non-Muslim immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who came to India before December 31, 2014. With the CAA rules being notified, the Modi government will now start granting Indian nationality to persecuted non-Muslim immigrants from the said countries. These include Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Christians. The CAA was passed in December 2019 and later got the assent of the President, but there were protests against it in many parts of the country. These rules, called the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024, will enable eligible persons under CAA-2019 to apply for grant of Indian citizenship.

Refugees will get citizenship

Under CAA, there is a provision to give citizenship to people of other religions coming from three Muslim majority neighboring countries except the Muslim community. The Citizenship Amendment Act was an integral part of the BJP’s 2019 manifesto. This will pave the way for the oppressed people to get citizenship in India. This is a big step by the central government before the Lok Sabha elections. Under this, minorities from neighboring countries will now be able to get Indian citizenship. For this they will have to apply on the online portal prepared by the Central Government.
