BSNL has finally stepped up to the plate. As of Friday, January 2, 2026, the state-run telco has officially rolled out Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) nationwide. It’s a New Year’s gift that’s been a long time coming for anyone who’s ever had to stand on a chair in their basement just to get a signal bar.
The thing is, while Jio and Airtel have had this for years, BSNL is using it as a critical stopgap while they finish their 4G rollout. Or nothing. Let’s be real, BSNL’s indoor coverage has been a running joke for a decade—this finally fixes the “shadow zones.” Those too.

The VoWiFi Breakdown: Field Notes
It’s an ongoing situation where your Wi-Fi router basically becomes your personal cell tower.
-
The “Kicker”: You don’t need a special app (unlike the old BSNL Wings). It’s baked into your phone’s native dialer.
-
The Cost: Zero. It’s free. Calls are billed according to your existing plan, so if you have “unlimited” calls, you’re good to go.
-
The Switch: It uses an IMS-based platform. That means if you start a call on your home Wi-Fi and walk out the door, it should seamlessly hand over to the mobile network without dropping. (Mostly.)

How to Flip the Switch
And here’s the kicker: it’s literally just a toggle button, but people always forget where it is.
-
For Android: Settings → Mobile Network → Select BSNL SIM → Wi-Fi Calling → Toggle ON.
-
For iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → BSNL SIM → Wi-Fi Calling → Toggle ON.
-
The “Check”: Once it’s active, you’ll see a little “Wi-Fi” icon next to the signal bars or a “VoWiFi” label in your status bar during a call.

Is Your Phone “Modern” Enough?
BSNL says “most modern smartphones” are compatible. If you’ve bought a phone in the last 3–4 years, you’re likely in the clear.
-
The List: Most Samsung (A/M/S series), Xiaomi/Redmi, and iPhones (6s and above) have it.
-
The Test: If you don’t see the “Wi-Fi Calling” option in your settings, you might need a software update. Or it’s time for an upgrade.
Basically, BSNL is trying to stop people from porting out. They added nearly 2.7 lakh subscribers in late 2025, and this feature is meant to keep them from leaving when they can’t get a signal inside their own living rooms.
