Big relief! ITR filing deadline extended by one month, check all details

Income Tax Return deadline: In a major decision on Wednesday, the Rajasthan High Court ordered an extension of the deadline for filing income tax returns (ITRs). The court directed the Direct Tax Authority to extend the deadline for filing tax audit reports and ITRs for the 2025-26 assessment year by one month.

The court said the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) will now have to extend the due date from September 30 to October 31. This order will provide relief to taxpayers and professionals who have been requesting additional time for a long time.

However, this order will currently apply only to Rajasthan, unless it is challenged in the Supreme Court. Tax experts believe this decision could force the CBDT to grant an extension nationwide. This could provide significant relief to millions of taxpayers across the country who have yet to file their returns.

Why did the demand arise and who initiated it?

On Monday, the Bhilwara Tax Bar Association filed a writ petition under Article 226 of the Constitution, asking the court to extend the deadline. Several tax bodies, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) also made similar requests to the Finance Ministry.

ICAI formally requested a two-month extension on September 19th. The organization stated that sufficient time was necessary between the filing of non-audit returns and the submission of tax audit reports. Meanwhile, tax professionals launched a campaign on the social media platform X to increase pressure on the government. Chartered accountants hailed the High Court’s order as a major relief for taxpayers and compliance professionals.

ITR deadline has been extended twice

The deadline for filing income tax returns (ITRs) for the financial year 2024-25 has been extended twice. The original deadline was July 31, 2025, and was later extended to September 15, 2025. It was then extended by one day at the last minute, to September 16, 2025.

This year’s income tax return filing deadline was extended primarily due to technical issues and the increasing number of taxpayers. In the last week of July, the e-filing portal reported frequent slowdowns and glitches, preventing many individuals from filing their returns on time. Tax bodies and professionals requested additional time from the government, leading to the extension of the deadline.
