Indian Railways is embarking on a major and historic change to enhance passenger convenience. Now, if a passenger’s travel plans suddenly change, they will no longer need to cancel their ticket and pay cancellation charges.

The Railways is preparing to introduce a new facility that will allow the travel date of a confirmed ticket to be changed online. This will free passengers from the hassle of booking new tickets and paying cancellation charges.

Online rescheduling facility available:

According to an NDTV report, this new railway facility allows passengers to reschedule their confirmed tickets online. This means that if for some reason you are unable to travel on the scheduled date, the same ticket can be used for a later date.

However, this facility will depend on seat availability. That is, tickets can only be exchanged if seats are available on the new date. If the fare for the new train is higher, passengers will have to pay the difference.

The new facility could begin in January 2026.

According to railway sources, this facility could be implemented as early as January 2026. Initially, it will be launched as a trial on a few key routes, after which it will be implemented nationwide. This move will bring relief to millions of passengers, especially those who suddenly change their travel plans.

Currently, railway passengers have to pay heavy cancellation charges.

Currently, railway passengers do not have a direct option to change their travel dates. If a passenger needs to postpone their trip, they must cancel their ticket and book a new one. The current cancellation charges levied by the railways are as follows:

  • AC First Class/Executive Class: ₹240 + GST
  • AC 2 Tier: ₹200 + GST
  • AC 3 Tier/AC Chair Car/AC 3 Economy: ₹180 + GST
  • Sleeper Class: ₹120
  • Second Class: ₹60

This new change will save passengers time, money, and hassle. This move by the Railways will prove to be another important initiative towards passenger-friendly reforms.
