The employees of the bank started working on alternate Saturdays seven years back. Since 2015, bank unions are battling for a holiday on all Saturdays and Sundays.
According to the United Forum of Bank Unions, an umbrella body of nine national level bank unions including NCBE and AIBEA, the IBA agreed in 2015 after approval from the RBI and the government that the second and fourth Saturdays would be the 10th bilateral settlement holiday.
According to the forum, it was agreed at that time that the establishment of a five-day banking week would be studied. According to the statement, the problem was raised in the 11th bilateral negotiations, but it could not be resolved.
