The confusion surrounding the exact date of Makar Sankranti in Uttar Pradesh has now been resolved. The Yogi government has made a major amendment to the calendar, officially declaring January 15, 2026, a public holiday. Following this decision, all government offices, schools, and banks in the state will now be closed on Thursday, January 15. Previously, the holiday was scheduled for January 14, as Makar Sankranti is typically celebrated on this date.
Major change in government order
According to a release issued by SVS Ranga Rao, Principal Secretary of the Uttar Pradesh government, Makar Sankranti was originally scheduled as a “Restricted Holiday” on January 14th. However, after considering astrological calculations and public sentiment, the government has revised this date. January 15th has now been declared a “Public Holiday” under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.
The UP government has clarified that the old list of holidays issued on November 17, 2025, should now be considered revised in accordance with this new order.
Astrological calculations and the importance of auspicious time
The main reason behind the festival’s date change is the Sun’s zodiac change. According to astrologers, this year the Sun will leave Sagittarius and enter Capricorn at night.
According to the Sindhu Nirnay and scriptures, if Sankranti falls at night, its celebration and auspicious time are observed the following day. Many astrologers also believe that the true auspicious time for Sankranti will be on January 15th, making it the best day to bathe and donate.
