A message is becoming increasingly viral on social media and WhatsApp these days, in which it is being claimed citing RBI that the Reserve Bank of India has instructed to stop withdrawing 500 rupees notes from ATMs. PBI has termed this claim as completely fake and misleading in its fact check.

PIB Fact Check revealed the truth of the viral claim on social media platform X. PIB refuted this claim and termed it completely fake. According to PIB Fact Check, RBI has not issued any such instruction. 500 rupee notes will remain fully valid as legal tender. PIB clarified that a message about 500 rupee note is spreading rapidly on various social media platforms including WhatsApp, which is completely false.

What is the claim in the message
The viral message on social media claims that RBI has instructed banks to stop withdrawing Rs 500 notes from ATMs by September 2025, which is completely wrong. Also, in the message going viral on social media platforms, citing RBI, it was also claimed that by March 2026, 75 percent of ATMs and after that 90 percent of ATMs will distribute only Rs 200 and Rs 100 notes. Also, people are being advised to spend the Rs 500 note as soon as possible.
