UIDAI has provided an online facility to update your Aadhaar card. Enter your new address and upload your documents. Upon submission, you will receive a 14-digit URN number, which you can use to check your status. This service is free until July 14, 2026.
Updating your Aadhaar card has become easier than ever, but this feature is only available for select updates. UIDAI has clarified on its website which updates you can complete online from home and which ones require you to visit an Aadhaar service center.
Many people still don’t understand the process to follow to change information such as name, address, mobile number, gender, or biometrics. If you’d like to make any updates to your Aadhaar, complete information is provided below.

Updates that can be done online
- Update Address: You can change your new address online and upload the required documents along with it.
- Download e-Aadhaar: You can download the digital copy of Aadhaar card from the comfort of your home.
- Order PVC Aadhaar: You can order a plastic (PVC) card for a small fee.
- Book an Appointment: You can book an appointment online for Aadhaar enrolment or update.
- Check Status: You can track the status of the card or update it on the website.
- Biometric Lock/Unlock: Lock or unlock with fingerprint or eye scan for security.
- Create Virtual ID: You can generate a Virtual ID (VID) to use in place of Aadhaar.
- Check Bank Linking: You can check online whether your bank account is linked with Aadhaar or not.
- Updates that require a visit to the center
- Getting Aadhaar for the first time: This process is completed only at the Aadhaar centre.
- Change in name: Verification is required for changing or correcting the name, hence one has to visit the centre.
- Mobile Number Update: Facility to change mobile number is available only at the centre.
- Change of Date of Birth: Correction of date of birth also requires personal presence.

Aadhaar Address Update Process
UIDAI has made it easier to update your address online. This service is completely free until July 14, 2026.
Step-by-step method:
- Visit the official website of UIDAI.
2. Open the “Document Update” section.
3. Enter your Aadhaar number by clicking on “Submit”.
4. Verify with the OTP received on your mobile.
5. Select “Address Update” and set the options:
- Changing the address on your document or
- Based on the head of the family.
6. Enter the new address and upload the required documents.
7. After submitting you will get an acknowledgement receipt.
This receipt will contain a 14-digit URN number, which you can use to check the status of your update online. Address verification can take up to 30 days.
Fee information
Address Update: Absolutely free if done online.
Name, Date of Birth or Biometric Updates: These may incur a fee of ₹ 75 to ₹ 125.
