Aadhaar new rules 2025: This year, i.e., 2025, UIDAI has made several significant changes to the Aadhaar card. This will directly impact millions of citizens. While the increased Aadhaar update fees and the elimination of free updates have come as a shock to people, there is also some relief in the form of free biometric updates for children. Furthermore, starting November 1st, all Aadhaar update rules may undergo significant changes. Let’s learn the full details.
Updating Aadhaar is a bit expensive.
The fee for Aadhaar updates has been increased, effective October 1, 2025. Changing your name, address, date of birth, or mobile number will cost ₹75, up from ₹50 previously. Similarly, biometric updates (fingerprint, iris, photo) will cost ₹125, up from ₹100 previously. These new fees will remain in effect until 2028.
UIDAI explained that these fees have been increased to account for service quality and the cost of technology improvements. This means that even minor updates will now be slightly more expensive.
Relief for children
UIDAI has made biometric updates free for children aged 7 to 15. Children’s fingerprints and iris updates will now be free of charge. UIDAI explained that facial features and fingerprints change throughout childhood, making periodic updates essential. Schools have also been instructed to ensure children’s Aadhaar is not inactive.
Online Updates and New Document List
UIDAI released a new document list for Aadhaar update and enrollment in July 2025. Clear documentation standards have now been set for all citizens, OCI cardholders, NRIs, and HUFs. Furthermore, UIDAI stated that an individual will have only one Aadhaar number. If duplicate Aadhaar numbers are found, action will be taken.
End of free updates
UIDAI previously offered Aadhaar holders the option of free online updates until June 14, 2025. This feature has now expired, and all updates will require a fixed fee. Those who fail to update on time will incur a small additional fee. Experts say that free updates may resume for a period of time in the future, so it’s important to pay close attention to UIDAI announcements.
Why is Aadhaar update necessary?
Aadhaar card has now become the primary identification card for every Indian. From opening a bank account to applying for government schemes, investments, property purchases, and school admissions, Aadhaar is required everywhere. If your address, date of birth, or mobile number are out of date, e-KYC verification may be delayed.
A big digital update is coming
Starting November 1, 2025, the UIDAI is expected to introduce a major digital transformation in Aadhaar updates. Under this change, citizens will be able to update their name, address, date of birth, gender, and mobile number completely online. There will be no need to visit an Aadhaar service center.
The new system will automatically verify your identity through government databases and digital verification technology, eliminating the need to upload documents or perform manual verification.
However, biometric updates (fingerprint, iris, photo) will still need to be done at a service center, as they require technical equipment.
What should Aadhaar holders do?
- Check your Aadhaar details by visiting the UIDAI website.
- If the name or address is incorrect, make the correction online immediately.
- Update children’s biometrics at 7 and 15 years of age.
- Check the status of PAN-Aadhaar linking so that there is no problem in banking or investing.
