Taking a big decision, the Assam government has decided to ban the issuance of new Aadhaar cards to people above 18 years of age in the state for one year. However, this ban will not apply to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and tea garden workers.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that people of those communities who have not yet got their Aadhar cards made will get a chance to apply in the month of September. After this, on applying, Aadhar cards will be issued only under special circumstances.

CM Himanta said that the Assam Cabinet has decided today that Aadhar cards will not be issued to people above 18 years of age for one year except Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and tea garden workers. If any person from other castes has not yet received the Aadhar card, they can apply for it within the month of September.

DC got special permission

The Chief Minister said that in extremely rare cases, the District Commissioner (DC) will have the authority to issue Aadhaar cards after the application window closes. However, he will have to examine the Special Branch report and the Foreigners Tribunal report before giving approval.

Aim to prevent illegal infiltration

CM Himanta said that the aim of the government is to preventillegal foreigners, especially Bangladeshi citizens, from obtaining Aadhaar cards in Assam and falsely claiming Indian
citizenship. He stressed that the state has continuously pushed  back infiltrators at the border. Now we want to ensure that no one (illegal foreigner) can enter the state and obtain Aadhaar card from Assam and claim to be an Indian citizen. We have completely closed that route.
