From now on, online database of passport, ration card, birth and matriculation certificates will be used for Aadhaar update. Assembly elections are to be held in Bihar. The opposition has dragged the government to the Supreme Court on this issue. During the hearing, the Election Commission clarified that the Aadhaar card is not a proof of citizenship but a proof of ID.

Illegal migrants have been trying to obtain unique identity cards on the basis of forged or fake documents. The responsibility of its verification has been of the state governments and Aadhaar is issued only after strict scrutiny through the state portal.

During the last 15 years, more than 140 crore Aadhaar cards have been made in the country. Although Section 9 of the Aadhaar Act states that it is not a proof of citizenship or residence, the new measures are an attempt to ensure that only citizens get the unique number.
