7th Pay Commission : The Congress government in Punjab led by Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Monday (November 1, 2021) increased the dearness allowance of its employees to 28 percent of the basic pay from the existing 17 percent. Just before Dhanteras and Diwali, this step of the state government is being considered as a big gift for these employees, but it is also a fact that this will put an additional burden of Rs 440 crore on the exchequer of the state government every month.

It is worth noting that after some time there are assembly elections in Punjab. A few months before the elections, this decision was taken in the cabinet meeting chaired by CM Channi. Addressing the media in Chandigarh, the Chief Minister said that the increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) from 17 to 28 per cent would result in an additional burden of Rs 440 crore every month.

He further informed that DA has been increased from July. The Chief Minister said that employees are the backbone of the state administration and reiterated his government’s firm commitment to accord top priority to their welfare.

The CM also announced that the employees recruited after January 1, 2016 would also be given the benefit of a minimum 15 percent increase in the revised pay at par with other employees. However, the salary of a junior employee shall not be fixed more than the salary of his seniors.

The Chief Minister of the Congress-ruled state said that representatives of various employees’ unions have assured him that they will not follow the path of agitation but will resolve their issues through mutual discussion.

According to CM Channi, the state government has resolved the issues of most of the employees to their satisfaction. In such a situation, they have called off their strike and resumed work with immediate effect. Let us tell you that before Punjab, the governments of UP, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Odisha have also given the gift of salary hike etc. to their employees before the festival.
