7th Pay Commission: In a bonus for railway employees, the central government has announced Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) equivalent to 78 days’ salary for the financial year 2020-21. Bonus amount is applicable to all eligible non-gazetted railway employees except RPF or RPSF personnel. The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the PLB.

The Union Cabinet said in a statement that about 11.56 lakh non-gazetted railway employees are likely to benefit from this decision. “The payment of PLB to eligible railway employees is made every year before Dussehra or Puja holidays,” the Union Cabinet said in a statement.

PLB amount of 78 days salary was paid for the financial year 2010-11 to 2019-20. The Central Government said that the PLB amount equivalent to 78 days’ salary will also be paid for the year 2020-21, which is expected to motivate the employees to work towards improving the performance of Railways.


  • According to the Union Cabinet statement, the financial implication of payment of PLB for 78 days to railway employees is estimated to be Rs 1984.73 crore.
  • The Union Cabinet has fixed a salary calculation limit of Rs 7,000 per month for payment of PLB to eligible non-gazetted railway employees. The cabinet said in a statement that the maximum amount payable per eligible railway employee for 78 days is Rs 17,951.
  • The PLB scheme for Railways came into force from the year 1979-80 and was developed in consultation with and with the approval of the Cabinet, from two recognized associations, the All India Railway Men’s Association and the National Association of Indian Railways. The plan envisages a review every three years, the statement said.
