The ground shook hard in Japan overnight. A massive 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit off the northern coast, triggering a tsunami and causing immediate chaos. The thing is, this area is right next to where the devastating 2011 quake happened. It leaves people shaken.

7.5 Quake Hits Japan: Aftershocks and a Megaquake Warning

The late-night quake struck around 11:15 p.m. in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of Aomori Prefecture.

  • The Immediate Damage: At least 33 people were injured, one seriously. Most of them were simply hit by falling objects as things crashed down inside homes and businesses.

  • The Tsunami: A wave of up to 70 centimeters (about 2.3 feet) was measured in Kuji port in Iwate. Smaller waves struck other communities. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued warnings, forcing 90,000 residents to evacuate. All warnings were lifted by Tuesday morning.

  • The Fallout: About 800 homes initially lost power. Shinkansen bullet trains and local lines were suspended for hours. Also, parts of a domestic terminal ceiling at New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido cracked and fell, forcing passengers to shelter overnight.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi was quick to state that an emergency task force was formed. Her core message was clear: “We are putting people’s lives first.”

The Kicker: Fear of the Big One

The location is the real anxiety. This quake occurred just north of the coastal region that was destroyed by the massive 9.0 magnitude quake and tsunami back in 2011. That event killed nearly 20,000 people.

  • The Warning: The JMA is warning people about possible aftershocks in the coming days.

  • The Megaquake: They even issued a caution about an increased risk of a magnitude 8-level quake and tsunami hitting the northeastern coast in the coming week. An official stated it plainly: “You need to prepare, assuming that a disaster like that could happen again.”

  • Nuclear Safety: While an estimated 450 liters of water spilled at the Rokkasho fuel reprocessing plant, the Nuclear Regulation Authority confirmed no safety concerns or abnormalities at any nuclear facilities.

Smaller aftershocks have already followed. And then the tension followed. This is a region that understands natural disasters better than anyone. They are being told to monitor their emergency preparedness closely.
