Taking a major decision, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a note of Rs 2,000 along with the announcement of demonetisation in November 2016. This note is going to be out of circulation after 7 years.

2000 Note: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is going to withdraw 2000 rupee note. However, it will remain legal tender. The Reserve Bank of India has advised banks to stop issuing Rs 2000 notes with immediate effect. RBI said that till September 30, these notes will remain in valid currency (circulation). That is, those who currently have 2000 rupee notes will have to exchange them from the bank.

RBI said that from May 23, you can change or deposit 2 thousand rupees notes up to 20 thousand rupees at a time. For this, banks will have to open a special window. Apart from this, 19 branches will be opened for exchange and deposit of RBI notes. RBI told in the press release that in 2018-19 itself, we had stopped printing Rs 2,000 notes.

When were 2000 thousand notes introduced

In November 2016, notes of 500 and 1000 rupees were closed and 2000 thousand rupees notes were introduced. During the announcement of demonetisation, the government had said that this step has been taken to end corruption and to curb the fake notes being printed. On this, the opposition parties attacked the central government and said that the government has taken this decision without thinking.

What did Congress say?

Targeting the government, the Congress has called it Tughlaqi’s decree. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that the specialty of our self-styled world guru is that he does first and then thinks second. He said that after the Tughlaqi decree on November 8, 2016, 2000 rupee notes were introduced with such fanfare and are now being withdrawn.
