Zoho Mail: The Indian government has migrated around 12,68,000 email accounts from several ministries and departments to Zoho Mail. “The number of accounts transferred to the Zoho platform is around 12.68 lakh, which includes 7.45 lakh central government employees,” said Jitin Prasada, Minister of State, MeitY.

According to him, the contract between the government and Zoho clearly stipulates that the government will retain ownership of all data and intellectual property generated during this period. The government will also have the flexibility to continue the platform or revert to the old system if needed.

He further explained, “To ensure this, the government, through NIC, has selected a Master Systems Integrator (MSI), namely Zoho. This is a robust cloud-based email solution that can support all government employees and users. This model allows for professional system upgrades, seamless migration of legacy email accounts to the new platform, and seamless integration of modern office tools such as word processors, spreadsheets, and presentation software.”

Regarding Zoho Mail, he said that it is a secure email service launched by a multinational tech company named Zoho Corporation.

What changes are going to come with the arrival of Zoho?

Previously, government email was managed by the National Informatics Center (NIC), which falls under the MeitY ministry. The NIC operates various digital services, including government email, websites, portals, and data centers. However, Zoho is now replacing the digital infrastructure used by NIC. This means that Zoho will handle the government’s critical technical tasks going forward, including providing email server infrastructure, storage and backup, providing advanced integration tools, ensuring robust cloud-based security, and strengthening security measures like spam filtering and malware detection.

However, the NIC will still retain certain essential powers, such as domain control, finalizing data policies, monitoring usage, and maintaining administrative-level control over all government accounts. With Zoho’s arrival, we may see improved security, including advanced spam filters, better DDoS protection, faster patching cycles, AI-based threat detection, and other features.
