Yamaha EC-06 vs River Indie: Should You Pay ₹22,000 Extra for the Yamaha Badge?

It’s Tuesday afternoon, February 3, 2026, and Yamaha has finally stopped teasing and started selling. The EC-06 is officially the brand’s first electric move in India, but if it looks a little familiar, that’s because it’s basically the “cool, athletic cousin” of the Bengaluru-based River Indie.

The thing is, Yamaha isn’t building this from scratch—they’re using River’s platform but charging a ₹22,000 premium for the badge and a sleeker suit. Or nothing.

The Yamaha vs. River Showdown: Field Notes

It’s an ongoing situation where one bike wants to be your SUV (the Indie) and the other wants to be your sporty city runabout (the EC-06). Here’s the ground reality:

  • The Top Speed Twist: This is the weird part. Despite the sportier Yamaha branding, the EC-06 tops out at 79 kmph. The River Indie? It’ll do 90 kmph. Let’s be real—if you’re hitting the flyovers, that 11 kmph difference matters. And then the range trade-off followed.

  • Range vs. Utility: Both use a 4 kWh fixed battery, but the Yamaha claims a slightly better 169 km (IDC) compared to the Indie’s 163 km. Why? Likely because the EC-06 is 3kg lighter and has slimmer bodywork.

  • The Storage Sacrifice: This is where the Indie wins by a mile. The Indie is the “SUV of Scooters” with 43L of boot space and a 12L glovebox. To get that sleek Yamaha look, they cut the boot down to 24.5L and deleted the glovebox entirely to make room for the charging port. Those too.

  • The “Blue Square” Experience: You can’t just buy this at any Yamaha dealer. It’s limited to the premium Blue Square showrooms in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu for now. Yamaha is betting that their service network and brand trust justify the higher price. Or nothing.

And Here’s the Kicker…

While the internals are identical (6.7 kW motor, 26 Nm torque), River just announced an 8-year warranty on their battery and motor for the Indie. Yamaha is sticking to a more traditional 3-year plan. The thing is, for ₹22,000 less, you’re getting more speed, more storage, and a longer safety net with the Indie. Those too.

One side comment—the EC-06 is actually being built at River’s factory in Hoskote. It’s a bit messy. Authentic, but it’s a “badge” play at the end of the day. It’s an ongoing situation. Or nothing.
