WhatsApp working on Guest Chats so you can message people without the app

The walled garden of WhatsApp is finally opening its gates. On Monday, March 16, 2026, details emerged regarding Guest Chats, a feature designed to bridge the gap between WhatsApp’s 2 billion+ users and those who have resisted joining the platform.

This experimental tool allows a registered user to “pull” someone into a secure, temporary conversation via a simple web link. For businesses, travelers, or those dealing with “app-averse” contacts, it removes the friction of forcing someone to install a new application just for a quick exchange.

How Guest Chats Work: The Invitation Process

Starting a guest conversation is designed to be as simple as sending a calendar invite.

  • Generation: A WhatsApp user creates a secure link from the “Invite a Friend” section or directly from their contacts list.

  • Access: The recipient clicks the link and is given two choices: “Download WhatsApp” or “Continue as Guest.”

  • Identity: Guests enter a display name (or pseudonym). Once joined, the guest can see the inviter’s phone number, but the inviter sees the contact labeled clearly as “Guest” in the top bar.

Privacy & Security: Encryption for Guests

One of the most impressive technical feats of Guest Chats is the maintenance of WhatsApp’s signature security.

  • Session Keys: When a guest joins via a browser, WhatsApp Web generates a unique identifier and a session-specific encryption key.

  • E2EE: Messages remain end-to-end encrypted. WhatsApp servers cannot read the content.

  • Verification: Users can still verify encryption by comparing security codes or scanning a QR code, even with a guest participant.

Feature Limitations: Why It’s Text-Only

To keep the browser experience lightweight and secure, many familiar features are currently disabled for guest accounts:

  • No Media: Sharing of photos, videos, documents, GIFs, or stickers is blocked.

  • No Voice/Video: Voice messages and real-time calls are not supported.

  • One-on-One: Guest Chats are strictly limited to individual conversations; guests cannot be added to group chats.

The Identity Caveat: Unverified Accounts

Because guests do not undergo a phone-number verification process, there is an inherent security risk.

  • No Verification: WhatsApp warns that it cannot guarantee the person who opens the link is the intended recipient. If an invite link is intercepted or forwarded, an unintended person could join.

  • Control: To mitigate this, WhatsApp provides the inviter with full control to block the guest at any time.

Reality Check

Guest Chats are a major step toward platform interoperability, partly driven by global regulatory pressure (like the EU’s Digital Markets Act). Still, the 10-day inactivity expiration makes this a poor choice for long-term communication. Therefore, while it’s perfect for a one-off business query or a temporary guest at an event, it isn’t a replacement for the full app experience. In fact, by giving non-users a “taste” of the interface, Meta is clearly using this as a powerful conversion tool to grow its user base.

The Loopholes

WhatsApp says the feature is for “reaching people without the app.” In fact, this is a “Metadata Loophole”—while the messages are encrypted, WhatsApp still collects metadata about the interaction (who you messaged, when, and for how long). Therefore, the “off-platform” user is still being integrated into Meta’s massive social graph. Still, the “Browser Loophole” remains; because the chat runs in a browser, it is susceptible to browser-based security threats (like malicious extensions) that the standalone app is better protected against.

What This Means for You

If you are a business owner or frequently deal with international clients, keep an eye out for the stable rollout. First, realize that you can now avoid the “Do you have WhatsApp?” dance. Then, if you are a non-user receiving a link, understand that you don’t need to give up your phone number to reply, making it a safer way to talk to strangers without committing to the platform.

Finally, understand that notifications are unreliable for guests. You should tell your guest contacts to check the browser tab manually, as they may not receive “push” alerts like app users do. Before you share sensitive info, always verify the identity of the person behind the “Guest” tag through another channel.

What’s Next

Expect Guest Chats to move out of beta and reach all users by early Summer 2026. Then, look for Meta AI integration within these guest windows, allowing guests to use basic AI tools without an account. Finally, expect third-party app integration (like messaging Telegram or Signal users from within WhatsApp) to use a similar “Guest-like” architecture as interoperability rules take full effect.
