The southwest monsoon has withdrawn from most parts of North India, including Delhi-NCR. Despite this, the region has been receiving continuous heavy rains for the last two days. Heavy to very heavy rains affected normal life in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, national capital Delhi on Tuesday evening, due to which people were stuck in traffic jams for hours. The Meteorological Department has predicted that the weather will deteriorate again this evening.

According to the Meteorological Department, in the last 24 hours, Patiala district received the highest rainfall of 50 mm, Mohali 48, Ludhiana 31, Amritsar 20.6, Pathankot 19, Bathinda 20.6, Ropar 36.5 and Gurdaspur 16.7 mm. Fatehgarh Sahib, Moga, Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala also received rain. Due to the rain, the temperature in the state has come down to 10.6 degrees Celsius.

Due to the rains that have been happening for the last two to three days, the temperature has suddenly dropped by up to 8 degrees. Rain has also been recorded at many places in Bihar, Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and the northeastern states. The continuous rains have also intensified the signs of winter. The Meteorological Department has already predicted severe cold in India this year, due to which La Nina is likely to become active.

The monsoon has now completely withdrawn from the hilly regions of North India and the plains of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi. In addition, the monsoon has already withdrawn from most parts of Gujarat and western Uttar Pradesh. The monsoon withdrawal had started in the areas of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh bordering Madhya Pradesh. However, the active monsoon systems on both the eastern and western sides for the last 10 days had prevented further withdrawal of the monsoon.

New system in the Bay of Bengal

According to Skymet Weather, the cyclonic storm formed in the Arabian Sea has weakened. Meanwhile, a new cyclonic circulation is expected to form over the north Bay of Bengal around October 8 along the east coast. The system is likely to remain in the same area for the next 3-4 days and then either weaken and dissipate or move northeastwards as a weak circulation or trough. Monsoon activity in northeast India usually continues after October 10 and ends around October 15.

Due to the prevailing weather conditions, the day temperature in Pathankot, Jalandhar, Patiala, Chandigarh, Ambala, Rohtak, Narnaul, Ajmer, Jaipur and Delhi has been recorded as low as 8 degrees Celsius below normal. Meanwhile, the temperature in Amritsar has been recorded as low as 11 degrees Celsius, which is very unusual for this time of the year. Rain and snowfall are expected to continue in the hills. After this, the weather is expected to clear across North India from October 9.
