Currently two strong weather systems are active in Madhya Pradesh, due to which there is a continuous spell of heavy rain in many parts of the state. On Saturday, the Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall alert for 12 out of 19 districts of Indore, Narmadapuram and Jabalpur divisions. It is estimated that Alirajpur, Dhar, Barwani, Khargone, Burhanpur, Khandwa, Harda, Narmadapuram, Betul, Narsinghpur, Chhindwara and Pandhurna may receive 2.5 to 4.5 inches of rain during the next 24 hours. The department has forecast continuous rain for the next three days, due to which there is a possibility of waterlogging in low-lying areas and overflowing of rivers and streams.

The system behind the rain

According to Dr. Divya E. Surendran, Senior Scientist of Meteorological Center, an active monsoon trough is passing over the state at this time. Apart from this, another trough line and a cyclonic circulation are also effective. Due to these three systems being active together, heavy rainfall is occurring in different parts of the state. Heavy rain was also recorded in many districts on Friday. Half an inch of rain fell in Seoni and Indore, while districts like Narmadapuram, Pachmarhi, Itarsi-Piparia, Pithampur of Dhar, Betul and Tikamgarh also received heavy rainfall. The same weather pattern is expected to remain on Saturday as well.

Average rainfall data and current situation

An average of 36.5 inches of rain has been recorded in Madhya Pradesh so far this year, whereas 30 inches of rain was normally expected during this period. Thus, 6.5 inches of excess rain has fallen in the state so far. If just half an inch more rain falls, the target of average rainfall for this season will be achieved. Last year, a total of more than 44 inches of rain was recorded in the state. This time too, the rainfall figure is likely to be more than normal.

Districts with highest and lowest rainfall

The rainfall figures in the state vary widely according to the districts. Guna is leading in terms of rainfall this time, where 54.5 inches of water has fallen so far. After this, 53.8 inches of rain has been recorded in Mandla, 50.9 inches in Ashoknagar, 50.7 inches in Shivpuri and 50.3 inches in Sheopur. On the other hand, the districts with the least rainfall are from Indore division. Only 18.7 inches of rain has been recorded in Indore district so far, which is the lowest in the state. Apart from this, 22.7 inches of rain has fallen in Burhanpur, 19.8 inches in Khargone, 21.5 inches in Khandwa and 21.4 inches in Barwani.
