IMD Weather Today: Although the process of withdrawal of monsoon has started, heavy rains are still falling in many states of eastern India. The intensity of the rain can be gauged from the fact that everything from roads to railway yards is submerged in water in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal.

The Meteorological Department has issued a fresh forecast for several affected states, which says that Kolkata residents will not get any relief from heavy to very heavy rains till September 26, 2025. In view of the natural calamity and the situation, the government has announced the closure of schools and colleges. Ten people have been reported to have died in rain-related incidents. During this, heavy rains are expected in states like Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It is also likely to affect states like Bihar and Jharkhand.

Heavy rains overnight in Kolkata led to waterlogging in many areas. In view of the situation, schools in West Bengal have already declared Durga Puja holidays. The Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rains, and schools and colleges have been closed on September 24-25. Heavy rains in many areas of Kolkata and South Bengal on Tuesday night disrupted the daily activities of people. Roads and low-lying areas were flooded, due to which buses, taxis and other public transport almost came to a standstill.

Waterlogging and overflowing of drains disrupted many daily activities in the city. In view of the situation, the West Bengal government has announced Durga Puja holidays for government schools and colleges. State Education Minister Bratya Basu tweeted, “An unprecedented disaster-like situation prevails in the state.” In the current situation, in view of the Chief Minister’s advice, it has been decided to close all educational institutions tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, i.e. September 24 and 25, 2025.

IMD gave the reason for the heavy rains

Some parts of Kolkata received more than 330 mm of rain in a few hours, while most parts of the city and its suburbs received an average of more than 250 mm of rain. Heavy rains in Kolkata on Tuesday severely affected air travel, causing at least 30 flights to be cancelled and several others to be delayed.

The IMD has said that due to a low pressure area formed in the northeast Bay of Bengal, more heavy rains are likely in several districts of South Bengal. The Meteorological Department has said that Purba Medinipur and West Medinipur, South 24 Parganas, Jhargram and Bankura districts of South Bengal are likely to receive heavy rains till Wednesday. Another new low pressure area is expected to form over the east-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around September 25.

Heavy rains have submerged various yards like Howrah Yard and Sealdah Yard, affecting train services. Maharashtra’s capital Mumbai is expected to receive continuous rainfall, especially towards the beginning and end of the week. Authorities have appealed to citizens to exercise caution during heavy rains and thunderstorms. Flooding is possible in low-lying areas and transport services may be disrupted. Residents are advised to follow local weather updates and safety advisories. The forecast highlights the dynamic nature of the monsoon along the coastal region of Maharashtra, emphasising the need for vigilance and preparedness in anticipation of weather-related disruptions.
