US Student Visa: The US is going to take another step against foreign students. The Trump administration will issue student visas for only four years. Until now, anyone could stay in the US indefinitely on an F visa.
The administration is increasingly strict on foreign students in the US. The Trump administration has decided to increase the maximum visa period for foreign students and exchange visitors to four years. The Trump administration says that the purpose of setting the maximum visa period is to prevent visa abuse. After the implementation of the proposed new rule, the period of stay of foreign students as well as professors, doctors and other visa holders in the US will be limited. Until now, students could stay in the US indefinitely on the basis of the duration of their status. This rule has been in force since 1978.
The Department of Homeland Security will publish proposed new visa rules on Thursday. Let us tell you that since 1978, students with F visas have been allowed to stay in the US indefinitely. This means that they can stay in the US as long as they are enrolled full-time in an educational program.
Taxpayers’ money was being wasted.
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said that for too long, previous administrations have allowed foreign students and other visa holders to remain in the United States almost indefinitely, causing security risks, a huge waste of taxpayer money, and harm to American citizens.
Opposition to proposed visa rules
If the rule is finalized, students would have to undergo periodic reviews by DHS to extend their stay. However, education advocates have warned that the proposal could create new barriers for international students. Miriam Feldblum, president and CEO of the Presidents’ Alliance, said international students deserve assurance that their time in the U.S. will be consistent with the requirements of their academic programs.
The Presidents’ Alliance represents leaders from more than 500 colleges and universities. She said international students are already the most closely monitored population in the U.S. They remain under the strictest scrutiny of DHS and educational institutions.
