US President Donald Trump has again supported the H-1B visa, popular among Indian professionals, saying foreign talent is needed as they train American workers.

He reiterated his support for the visa at a time when many in his Republican Party are calling for the end of the H-1B visa program. Last week, Trump defended the visa program, saying the United States needs to attract talent from around the world because the country lacks certain talent.

“We make very few chips in the United States, but in the next year, we’re going to be making chips on a massive scale. We’re going to have a bigger share of the chip market. But we have to teach our people how to make chips. America used to do that. We accidentally lost this industry to Taiwan,” Trump told reporters at the White House.

Last week, Trump also supported H-1B visas in an interview with Laura Ingraham on Fox News when asked if the H-1B visa issue would not be a major priority for his administration.

Trump responded, “I agree, but you have to bring in talent.” When Ingraham said, “We have a lot of talent,” Trump replied, “No, you don’t. You don’t have a certain talent. People have to learn.”

He said, “You can’t pull people off the unemployment line and say, ‘I’ll put you in a factory, we’ll make missiles.'” Following the president’s statement, several Republican leaders began calling for the H-1B visa program to be discontinued. The White House subsequently clarified that the $100,000 fee on visa applications was a crucial first step toward preventing irregularities.

Indians got the most visas

Last September, Trump signed an executive order tightening the H-1B visa program, requiring new applications for H-1B visas filed after September 21 to pay a $100,000 (roughly Rs. 88 lakhs) fee as a requirement for eligibility.

This visa is very popular among Indians. In recent years, Indians have received more than 71 percent of H-1B visas issued. American tech companies rely on this visa to hire highly skilled foreign workers.
