Chandigarh: The makers of ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ and ‘The Lunchbox’ have chosen to bring the bestselling novel ‘Maharaja in Denims’ written by Chandigarh writer Khushwant Singh on screen. Guneet Monga’s Sikhya Entertainment and Emeraldis, the imprints of Manjul Publishing House, on Wednesday announced the purchase of the film rights to the historical narrative. The novel has an interesting story of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, an eye-witness story of a teenager named Hari, who considers himself a reincarnation of the Maharaja.
The story is between two eras i.e. the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and the glorious rule of contemporary India. Maharaja Ranjit Singh is known as ‘Sher-e-Punjab’ or ‘Lion of Punjab’. Hari is a bridge between the historical, spiritual and political history of Punjab, past and present.

Talking about this, acclaimed producer of award-winning films, founder of Sikhya Entertainment, Guneet Monga said, “This is a story that shows Punjab with a new spectacle.”

He added, “The landscape is very rich in history, even more than the stories of Partition, which we have seen in mainstream cinema till now. It will be exciting to see the famous Maharaja Ranjit Singh with the spectacles of a youth. “

Popular in the industry for producing acclaimed films like ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, ‘The Lunchbox’ and ‘Masaan’, Guneet said that Khushwant’s novel is a story of many ages and very poignant and courageous then and now.
