The “Zelensky Draft”: US Security Guarantees & EU Membership
The thing is, we might finally be looking at the beginning of the end for the largest conflict in Europe since WWII. Basically, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has just gone public with a massive 20-point peace plan designed alongside the Trump administration.1
Actually, it’s a total overhaul of a previous, more controversial draft, aiming to balance Ukraine’s survival with Russia’s demands. As a result, if this goes through, a full ceasefire would take effect the moment all signatures hit the paper (let’s be real, that’s the “if” of the century).

And here’s the kicker. The security guarantees are designed to look exactly like NATO’s Article 5.
Specifically, the U.S. and Europe would treat any future Russian invasion as an attack on themselves. Instead of a full NATO membership right now, Ukraine gets a “mirror” guarantee and a fixed timeline for joining the EU (likely 2027 or 2028).3 In fact, the plan allows Ukraine to maintain a massive peacetime army of 800,000 personnel—double what some earlier drafts suggested.
Consequently, Kyiv isn’t being asked to disarm, but rather to become a fortified “buffer” state with Western backing.
[Table: Key Pillars of the Trump-Zelensky 20-Point Plan]
| Category | Provision | Details |
| Sovereignty | Reaffirmed | All signatories must formally recognize Ukraine’s sovereign status. |
| Security | “Article 5” Mirror | US/Europe provide collective defense if Russia reinvades. |
| Military | 800,000 Personnel | Ukraine keeps a large peacetime force; remains non-nuclear. |
| Territory | “De Facto” Contact Line | Current frontlines recognized for troop deployment purposes. |
| Economy | $200 Billion Fund | US-European capital fund for reconstruction and tech. |
| Governance | Peace Council | Managed by Donald Trump; includes Ukraine, Russia, NATO. |

In fact, the territorial issue is where the “uneven” rhythm of diplomacy gets tricky. The thing is, the plan “de facto” recognizes the current frontlines in Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson as the contact line.Actually, Zelensky has floated the idea of creating “Free Economic Zones” in the Donbas that would be demilitarized and monitored by international forces.
As a result, neither side “gives up” land legally, but the fighting stops where the tanks are currently parked.Instead of a tidy wrap-up, any change to this status would require a national referendum in Ukraine.
The thing is, the Kremlin’s response is the final hurdle. Basically, Moscow has been briefed by Trump’s envoys (including Jared Kushner) and is currently “formulating its position.”9 Actually, they might balk at the joint management of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant or the presence of international monitors.
And then Y followed. Zelensky has already called for an “all-for-all” prisoner exchange and the immediate return of deported children.11 Consequently, the world is holding its breath for a New Year’s breakthrough that could finally silence the guns after nearly four years of war
