Trump Ceasefire Claim COLLAPSES as Thailand-Cambodia Fighting Rages
The ongoing border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia escalated dramatically, with fighting continuing hours after US President Donald Trump claimed the two nations had agreed to a renewed ceasefire. The reality on the ground directly contradicted Trump’s social media post, confirming a major breach of diplomacy.
Thai PM: “They Must Show Us First”
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul explicitly denied any agreement to cease fire, confirming that military actions by Thailand were continuing to repel what he described as threats to Thai land and people.
In a statement that directly refuted the US President’s claim, Anutin said a ceasefire would only be possible under two conditions:
Cambodia must withdraw all its forces.
Cambodia must remove all landmines from the border area.
“Thailand will continue to perform military actions until we feel no more harm and threats to our land and people. I want to make it clear. Our actions this morning already spoke.”
Air Strikes and Escalation
The conflict, which has been simmering since the French-drawn border of 1907, has now intensified to include fighter jets.
Cambodian Report: Cambodia’s defence ministry reported on X that Thai military used two F-16 fighter jets to drop seven bombs on targets on Saturday. “Thai military aircraft have not stopped bombing yet,” the post read.
Casualties and Displacement: The renewed fighting has already resulted in at least 21 deaths and forced the evacuation of around 700,000 people on both sides, underscoring the severity of the crisis.
The current violence is a complete unraveling of the “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” that was brokered by the US and Malaysia back in July and formalized in October, a deal Trump had previously touted as a foreign policy victory.
Here’s the kicker: The failure of the October agreement was largely due to ongoing accusations, with Thailand suspending the deal over claims of newly laid Cambodian landmines—a threat the Thai Prime Minister says Cambodia must address before any truce is possible.
