In Himachal Pradesh, teachers will now retire at the end of the academic session. The Finance Department has issued a notification in this regard on Wednesday. This provision has been made for the Education, Technical Education and Medical Education departments. Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu had made this announcement on 15 August to maintain a year-round learning environment in educational institutions. Due to the government’s decision, the retirement age in education related departments in the state has now increased from 58 years to 59 years.
The state government has decided to provide session-wise re-employment to retired teachers for the current academic year 2025-2026. The government’s decision will benefit teachers working in various educational departments including school education, higher education, technical education, AYUSH education and medical education. The notification issued by Principal Secretary Finance Devesh Kumar clarified that teachers who attain normal retirement age during the academic session are now allowed to continue their service till the end of the session.
With this decision, institutions will not have to face shortage of teachers in the middle of the session. At the same time, this will not disrupt the education and academic planning of the students. Teachers whose retirement notification date is to be between 27 August 2025 and the last day of the month preceding the end of their respective academic session will automatically get re-employment.
During this period these teachers will get a fixed remuneration, which will be calculated as the difference between their last pay and the full pension they receive. All retirement benefits like gratuity, leave encashment, final GPF and pension commutation will be paid after completion of the session-wise re-employment period. However, regular monthly pension will start from the date of retirement.
Those who do not want re-employment will have to inform 60 days in advance.
Teachers who do not want re-employment will have to formally inform 60 days before their retirement date. This request has to be made on a prescribed format. Teachers who are going to retire within 60 days from the notification date can exercise the option any time before their retirement.
